Just go make some friends.
I spent some time in a mentor session last week.
She was talking about her goals for how to get to the other side of a job hunt. She was doing all the right things.
On paper.
She was doing the applying, researching the companies, updating the resume, and on and on and on.
What she wasn’t doing was making friends.
It’s the only tip that I have for people who are in the job market right now because it’s the only one I’ve seen work almost every time.
I know it worked for me when I was figuring out what I was going to do. Heck, I’ve built several businesses off of it.
Meet people. Have virtual coffee without an agenda. Give what you have to give without expectation of return. Target your industry, but don’t worry if they’re out of it. Make yourself reliable and valuable.
Give more than you receive.
I’m a firm believer that it works every time, but not in a way that makes it cause and effect. It’s not an equal and opposite reaction, and you’re not writing a Christmas list. Whatever is on the other side of that effort is not going to come to you exactly as you asked, but what comes will be right.
So sure, fill out the applications if that activity makes you feel like you are completing the appropriate steps.
But also go make some friends because when they see a posting, they’ll remember their friends first.
And that DOES work.
