I think people mean it as a compliment.
“I’m like a mini version of you!”
I get it fairly frequently from people who have been following me for a while or who get excited about something that I wrote.
I want to be clear, though. It’s not what I’m after.
I’m flattered, but it’s not the point. Like, at all.
There already are two mini versions of me running around and, if you ask the guy who bears most of the responsibility for wrangling the three of us, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
That said, that’s still not the point.
I don’t anyone aspiring to be a copy of me in any form. I want you to be a whole, giant, fully realized version of you.
Then, we can be besties because we like the same things and want to smash the patriarchy together.
Don’t aspire to me.
Aspire to all of you.
