From where I stand, they may be more common than jobs that are non-toxic and safe for consumption. At least, it seems that way from the people I get to talk to every day.
The story is common enough that it's almost scripted. Awful bosses, more work than any one person can handle, constant threat of layoffs, leaders who make decisions based on ego rather than capability, secret off-the-books meetings to stop leadership from undoing progress . . .
It spans all industries, and sometimes it feels impossible to avoid. If you're in that situation now, though, the common narrative that you should just quit isn't helpful either.
And I say that as someone who did quit a job without notice and who would never change that decision.
That said, I would change how I let them make me feel. I would have taken back control and created boundaries and realized there was life outside of what was happening in my workplace.
There are good reasons to stay in bad jobs.
It's hard, but it's possible, and sometimes you don't have a choice.
